If you’ve ever eaten at McD’s (I blush to admit I love their fries), you know they’ll ask if you want to super size your meal. Wouldn’t it be cool if you could go into the Small Biz Store and super size your profits?

While it may seem counter intuitive at first, paying someone else to do certain things can actually improve your bottom line. The trick is to know when and what to outsource.

Now our villainous Number Muncher would love for you to think all outsourcing is bad, or convince you to to outsource the wrong things. Luckily I’m on to his villainous plot, and with the help of a few friends, will help you outwit his dastardly designs.

Time to Upsize Your Bottom Line!

Ready to get started? Great, let’s begin with which activities are candidates to be outsourced.

What should your small business outsource?

The first rule of <strike>Fight Club</strike> outsourcing – never outsource anything that is critical to your identity or brand. It takes years to build a reputation and seconds to destroy it. While I love to have guest bloggers, my unique sense of humor (and the laugh, don’t forget the laugh) are integral to my brand. Having someone else write all my posts would actually undermine my business.

Take a few minutes and brainstorm all the activities you do in your business. Pay particular attention to repetitive tasks, even if they only take 5 minutes at a time. Consider if you could save 5 minutes a day for a year, that would be over 20 hours a year! (5 minutes * 5 days a week * 50 work weeks = 1,250 minutes or 20.83 hours). Who couldn’t use an extra 20 hours a year?

Need some help assessing your list? Fluffy the Finance Feline is here to help!

Is the task something that you could easily document and / or train another person to do?

Does the task involve a skill set that is NOT your core competency. For example, I can’t draw, so I pay someone else to illustrate my cast of characters.

Is the cost to outsource less than you could earn if you were working with a client?

If you answered yes to to these three questions the activity or task is a candidate for outsourcing. Of course you still need to use common sense. Putting gas in my car would qualify according to these three questions, but is that really practical?

When should your small business outsource?

When it’s a matter of expertise I generally recommend using an outside resource. Going back to drawing for a minute, have you ever seen the original Fluffy? No? Here he is. Now you can see why I paid someone else to draw him!

The second thing to consider is what will you do with the time you free up?

Can you spend it on other, revenue generating activities? If yes, and you can earn more than you are paying to outsource the time is right!

What if you are still building your business, and you have more time than money? I’d suggest holding off outsourcing the repetitive tasks. Document them, be prepared to hand them off, and then when your business revenue grows you can gradually offload to a third party.

You may also want the time for your personal life. Maybe you are working 60 hours a week now, and this would let you get down to 45. While I love my business, I also want to have enough time to enjoy my success with my friends and family.

Final Thoughts

Do you outsource anything right now? If so, what? Has it paid off for you? If you haven’t outsourced yet, will you consider it now? Sound off below!

Are you sick of developing products only to see dismal sales?

Do you feel like you’re playing Russian Roulette when you develop a new service?

Do you wish you could afford to do market research?

Good news – I can help.

Learn how to research your target market, and get paid to do it!

Market research isn’t out of your reach. In fact, any business, even a new business, can research their market and make money doing it!

Market Research that Pays You: The Concept

When you want to create a new product or service you start with an idea. Whether the idea is to offer an eBook on how to make the best darn paper airplane, or to be a personal hiking guide to the top of Kilimanjaro, it all began with an idea.

The trick to being a successful business is knowing which ideas are the real money makers, and then delivering like crazy to your customers. How do you know which ones will be successful?

Let your clients tell you!

Build your product or create your service after they’ve purchased it. Think about it. When someone puts their money down on the table you know they’re serious. Conversely, everyone could say what a great idea it is and then not buy it.

You may be wondering, Nicole how do I sell something that doesn’t exist yet? Easy, you offer pre-sales, early bird discounts, and founding member packages. If no one buys your offer, the market has just told you not to waste your time. If you do sell a bunch you’re getting paid to create that product!

Let’s walk through a few examples.

Market Research that Pays You: eBook Pre-Sales

You’ve decided you can write the eBook to end all eBooks on constructing the perfect paper airplane. But is there really a market for another (or even the first) eBook on paper airplanes? Before you invest time and resources to create the eBook run a pre-sale and find out.

Easy Peasy eBook Market Research Pre-Sale

Create an outline of the book, key selling points and a title

Create a simple pre-launch sales page of the book. Let your market know the book won’t be available until a certain date in the future. Offer a substantial discount or meaningful bonuses if they pre-order.

Promote the pre-order sales page to your list, as well as on social media. Use your network to get the word out.

If you begin to make sales, then it’s time to write the paper airplane eBook you’ve been dreaming of. It’s critical to deliver the eBook on time. Keeping your commitments is the foundation of any successful business.

Launch the eBook, put it on Kindle, and market it like crazy! You’ve already been paid to create it, and you know a market exists.

Market Research that Pays You: Founding Member

Perhaps you want to offer a mastermind group to along with a book you’ve already published. If the book has been successful you already have a warm group to which you can promote the idea. Better yet, ask them.

I know, it’s crazy. Asking the customer what they want. Or listening to them when they offer ideas. As you may know, I recently launched my book called How to be a Finance Rock Star: The Small Business Owner’s Ticket to Multi-Platinum Profits. While it is written as a stand-alone tool, some readers expressed an interest in a mastermind group to do a hands-on walk through of the book.

Great idea! Only I didn’t have a such a thing created. The traditional approach would be to spend the time to create it and then offer it. Of course that means I’m not earning money, and more importantly the people currently interested have nothing to purchase.

OR, I could tell them I’m launching a new service, and a limited group of people will get a chance to be the first ones through it. Since it will still be a work in progress I will offer it at a discounted price. In this case my regular price will be $247 for an eight week small group mastermind covering my book.

However for the initial participants, my small VIP group, they can get this same service for only $100. Yes a Finance Rock Star VIP Mastermind Pass for only $100. (Gratuitous self-promotion: As of the date I wrote this one slot is open, so feel free to sign up using this link).

If no one actually paid to join the Finance Rock Star Mastermind Group then I would know it wasn’t really a service that was of interest to my market. However since people have signed up for it, I will be getting paid to develop the course. The participants receive my same great service as a significant discount. It’s a win-win!

Market Research that Pays You: Crowdfunding Your Offering

Let’s say you want to create a new paid community. However there is significant development cost, both in software and in time. You really, really, really believe its a great idea, but are worried if no one joins you’ll be out a ton of cash.

Why not crowdfund your community? Not only will it cover your development costs, it tells you if people are really willing to pay to be a part of the community you plan to offer.

How to test and fund your kick butt community

Determine the costs involved. That will be your project fundraising goal.

List out the benefits a paid member of the community will receive

Go to Peerbackers.com or a similar crowdfunding site and start a project. Be sure to offer special benefits or free membership for a certain number of months to those who fund your start-up costs

Promote to your list, through social media and your network. Heck even tell you mom, you know she’ll spread the word.

The monies are only disbursed if you hit your funding goal. Otherwise they are returned to the backers.

This is another win-win. If you hit your goal you have the money to build your community, the knowledge that there is a market willing to pay for it, and a built in core of people who will participate.

Final Thoughts

Have you ever tried one of these ideas? If so, what were your results? If not, would you? Why or why not?

Do you face your business planning with a sense of dread?

Is creating a plan something you only did because you needed it for funding?

Do you have a business plan, but it’s primarily used as a coaster for your coffee mug?

Multiple studies show that entrepreneurs who use some type of formal planning are more likely to succeed. So like medicine, why can’t there be a spoonful of sugar to make it go down? (FYI that will probably be the only time I ever quote Mary Poppins).

Good news, there is! In fact, it’s better than a spoonful of sugar. It’s more like a double chocolate peanut butter cheesecake for business planning. It’s the The Right-Brain Business Plan: A Creative, Visual Map for Success by Jennifer Lee!

I had the chance to <strike>pester</strike> interview Jennifer Lee recently, read on for her amazing insights.

Interview with Jennifer Lee, author of The Right Brain Business Plan™

Question #1: The book Right-Brain Business Plan goes against all conventional wisdom. There’s pictures, craft projects, and a sense of fun. How did you know or decide that there really was a need and a market for this book?

The idea for the book came about very organically back in November 2007 while I was participating in an Art Every Day Month challenge. I was inspired to make a visual representation of my business goals so I made a collaged accordion book that had a vision board on one side and pockets and cards with the details of my plan on the other. And that’s how the first Right-Brain Business Plan® was born.

I heard on my blog how excited people were about bringing more creativity into their work. Traditional business books left them feeling alienated, overwhelmed, or just plain old bored! In 2008, I created a 9-page illustrated e-Book and readers started to share pictures and their stories of how the Right-Brain Business Plan had helped them. Plus, my workshops and courses let me see up close and personal how the process really gives people permission to let their creativity guide them in planning and running their business.

The RBBP approach had certainly tapped into a collective yearning in the creative community for a new way of doing business way that works for us right-brainers!

Question #2: What is a Left Brain Chill Pill? Can you recommend one for our readers when facing the “numbers beast”?

A Left-Brain Chill Pill is a short quick tip that helps you quiet your judging mind.

Here’s a chill-pill for you:

Release Mental Money-Baggage. Write down all of the fears and limiting beliefs you have about money and abundance. Once you’re done with that laundry list, transform them into positive, empowering affirmations. Now take the paper with your limiting beliefs and crumple it up and toss it in the trash. Connect back to your affirmations and breathe in ease and confidence. Post your affirmations where you can easily see them, especially when you’re working on your books or doing pricing.

Question #3: I love the concept of Creative Cohorts. Can you summarize the idea, and why the shift in mindset is important to entrepreneurs?

Creative Cohorts are the people who support you and your business. They include:

Your colleagues who provide you with emotional support and accountability (referred to as a Nurture Huddle in the book).

Your inner circle of advisors and experts who help you make decisions and provide expert guidance

The freelancers you hire to help you with specific tasks (like design, bookkeeping, copy writing, etc.)

Your mentors who you admire and learn from.

And anyone else who helps to keep your business running smoothly

One of the biggest mistakes I see entrepreneurs make is trying to do everything on their own.

Sure, it may seem easier and more cost-effective to go it alone, but in fact, you’re most likely wasting your precious time on things you’re not very good at or can’t stand doing and that means you’re squandering opportunities for you to be focusing on what you love to do and on what makes you more money. Even if you’re not ready to hire help, it’s important to have emotional support and people to turn to when you’re stuck.

That’s why having something like a Nurture Huddle or an accountability buddy is so beneficial to helping you move forward more quickly. Plus it’s just more fun to be surrounded by folks who love and support you and who want you to succeed!

If you attend the free Right-Brainers in Business Video Summit this week, you’re sure to connect with lots of creative cohorts from around the world! Hope to see you there!

What is your most valuable asset?

Do you think it’s the equipment you use to create your product?

Perhaps you feel it’s your stellar ____________ skills, or your track record as a _____________.

One year ago I would have answered my finance skills and track record as an actuary, CFO and Investment Banker.

Boy was I wrong.

Join me in taking stock of the past year and discover your undervalued assets

.

Almost one year ago to the day I had the wonderful privilege of attending Jennifer Lee’s Right Brain Business Plan™ Video Summit. Jennifer was a successful corporate executive before leaving and starting her own business. Her book, and her whole philosophy, embraced rather than suppressed her creativity and quirkiness.

Watching her successful book launch, and seeing the amazing response her book and her approach received, I realized a corporate (read stodgy) image was not necessary to succeed as an entrepreneur. In Jennifer’s case, it was the fact she broke out of that shell that drove her success. This was truly a life changing realization for me.

The Right Brain Business Plan Video Summit is back again this year, and participating in the live streaming is free. Take the time to attend, I know it will pay off in your business through insights, inspiration or new easy to use tools. Click here for the details or on the image of her book (also recommended!).

Right Brain Unleashed – My First Unusual Asset

Instead of writing blog posts on the definition of economic recovery (oh yes I did, and its still out here!), I began to celebrate my quirky humor. Instead of bashfully injecting a few jokes, I plunged in whole hog.

Silly, irreverant, and (hopefully) chuckle worthy, I released my inner creative comic perspective on finance.

Do you have a unique skill or perspective that you aren’t using?

List out the attributes your friends and family love about you. How might you transfer those attributes to a business setting? Remember people do business with people, not companies. If it’s a trait valued by friends it could be a one used to build business relationships as well.

Sadly the video summit came to an end, yet I was craving more. I didn’t want to return to my gray, bland solopreneur existence.

Luckily I had found a community, a Quirkipreneur community led by Ringmaster Tori Deaux. In fact Tori was the one who introduced me to the Right Brain Business Plan™ Book & Video Summit.

Tori had created a business plan named Emmit, who took on a life, and Twitter handle, of his own. Emmit had such a pull, a weekly chat was started to cover issues facing creative entrepreneurs.

It’s still going strong, and new participants are always welcome. Information:

Every Monday at 1 p.m. CST
Twitter Hashtag #quirkybiz (recently changed from #emmit)

Fluffy the Finance Feline – My Second Unusual Asset

As I continued my involvement with the weekly chats I realized I had Emmit Envy. This illness causes one to want their own cool mascot, although not necessarily a clown. Emmit had personality. He was a perfect foil for Tori, and created a rallying point for her “right people”.

I needed a mascot who was approachable, relatable but not so over the top as to scare off my right people. Thus Fluffy the Finance Feline was born (yes that’s him right there).

He became so well liked the launch of my book How to be a Finance Rock Star included a #FluffySighting contest. And yes, I just gratuitously plugged my own book. Girls gotta make a living!

Mascots are universal. They build brand loyalty, and create a rallying point.

Does your business have a mascot? Why not?

As part of my rebranding process I created The Numbers Whisperer™. Intuitively I knew I needed something less intimidating, less stuffy, than my business name. Lucky for me the name attracted the attention of Tea Silvestre, The Word Chef.

Tea invited me to join the Word Carnival, from which some of the participants created a mastermind group. That group reinforced the need to embrace my new title, The Numbers Whisperer™ and they remarked upon my laugh.

My Laugh – Third Unusual Asset

I would be the first to say “Laugh” does not usually end up on someone’s list of core business assets. Yet for me it did!

Once I put on my listening ears (admit it, you watch Judge Judy reruns too late at night), I realized that my right people loved to hear me laugh. Descriptions ranged from infectious to soothing, yet they all had something in common. They all said they enjoyed hearing me laugh, it was part of the experience, a good part that helped reduce any anxiety created by their fear of finance or numbers.

What unusual or unique traits do you have? How are you using them in your business?

Previously I had tried to mute my laugh, thinking my larger than life guffaws were not in keeping with the topic of finance. Don’t miss out on something that could grow your business at no cost to you. Ask your top clients and trusted colleagues what traits they most value about you. Ask if you have any quirks they find endearing. You may be surprised at the answers you receive.

Want to hear me laugh? Check out my weekly radio show at Small Biz Finance on Blog Talk Radio.

Final Thoughts

What are your unusual assets? Has this post pointed out assets that were languishing in the background, just waiting for a chance to boost your business?

This post is part of the February Word Carnival — a monthly group blogging event specifically for small business owners. (It’s the most fun you’ll have all month!) Check out the rest of the fabulous carney work here.

Your brand. It’s a lot more than just your business name or logo. It’s how you’re perceived in the minds and hearts of your customers and prospects.

And guess what? Your brand may actually be worth something. Have some equity. Some actual monetary value that — should you ever decide to sell your business — would help make up the total value of your company.

The challenge (or paradox) is that while your brand does have some sort of value, it’s very hard to pin down.

How do you figure out the value of your brand?

Let’s look at how purchases are made.

When you shop for groceries, you’ve got several brand options to choose from in every category. One of those options is usually a generic or bargain product.

Think about which you choose and why.

For me, it depends on the product. Sometimes — when price is more important and there is no discernible difference to me in quality, I go with the generic version. Other times, when I want to be sure that I get the full flavor I’m after, I’ll choose my favorite brand. And sometimes, when I find something totally new and I’m not sure, my brand associations may spill over into my decisions about purchasing this new item. If it’s a brand I trust, I may be more likely to buy it.

When we trust a brand and find it relevant to our lives, we select the products and/or services associated with that brand over those of competitors, even if we have to pay more.

And when a brand’s promise is so strong that it exceeds any one product (e.g. people will buy any product based solely on the name), the business that owns that brand has the power to leverage it to enter new markets or to charge higher prices. That is how a brand holds value. And in financial lingo, we call that brand equity.

Brand Equity translates simply to your ability to charge a certain price. If you can’t charge a premium price, then you don’t have any brand equity. (Not necessarily brand value, which is a different animal altogether.)

A simple comparison of two brands

As an example, let’s look at the difference between Coca-Cola and Cott (the makers of RC Cola):

Aswath Damodaran, Professor of Finance at NYU Stern discussed how to valuate a brand at the L2 Innovation Forum in 2010. In particular, he compared Coke and RC:

“Soda is water with a bunch of sugar and a lot of crap thrown in. You can put whatever you want on the outside of the can, but there is really no difference between a cola and another cola. You may say that Coca-Cola tastes different — that’s what 100 years of playing with your mind does to you.”

For him, the cola business is all about brand perception, not the actual product.

At the time of his presentation, Damodaran valued Coca-Cola’s business at $79.6 billion, while the value of Cott was limited to $15.4 billion. Coke therefore, had a pricing premium of $64.2 billion total (the difference between the two brands’ equity). That’s about 80% of the company’s value.

Damodaran noted that the key number driving the valuation is the companies’ operating margins — Coca-Cola’s margin is 15.57%, while Cott’s is 5.28%. Typically, a company in that industry has an operating margin of 5-7%, so Coca-Cola’s margin was phenomenal.

The bottom line: If Coca-Cola suddenly lost its brand name, its operating margins would drop to around 5.28%, and it would lose $64.2 billion of value.

Factors that make up a Brand’s Value

Brand equity is just one of the factors that can increase the financial value of a brand. Other elements include (but aren’t limited to): changing market share, profit margins, consumer recognition of logos and other visual elements, brand language associations made by consumers, consumers’ perceptions of quality and other relevant brand values.

Did your eyes glaze over? Yep, me too.

Unless you’re in love with the numbers side of things, the process of figuring all this out can be a little overwhelming.

But what it all means is that in order to understand the true value of your brand, you need to look at more than just your brand equity. You also need to understand:

Your investment for developing your brand visuals (the logo and other marketing materials). How much time and money did you spend? And how much would a business normally spend on this? (Did you spend more, less?)

How much of the market share do you currently have? Is your market local or global?

How well-known is your brand? If you were to survey a random sample of your target audience, what percentage would recognize you?

How loyal are your customers? How large is your customer list and how quickly is it growing?

These are all factors of your brand’s value. But they don’t really give you a hard and fast number.

According to the entry on Wikipedia: “Brand equity and brand value are strategically crucial, but famously difficult to quantify. Many experts have developed tools to analyze this asset, but there is no universally accepted way to measure it.[9]

My best advice: Build a strong brand. Nurture it. Guard it. It’s your most sustainable competitive advantage.

And when you get ready to sell your business (you do have an exit strategy, right?), you can then enlist the help of a qualified valuation expert to help you determine your brand’s value.

A few branding reminders:

Word of Mouth is going to either rocket you into the stratosphere or kill your business. It all depends on what people are saying. (Give them something good to talk about!)

It’s all about the perception, not the reality. It’s about the intangible emotional connections your customers have with your brand.

You can help or hurt your brand by the company you keep. Think about what happened with Nike when the Tiger Woods scandal broke. It probably wasn’t something they ever anticipated happening. But it did. And they had to deal with it. Your sponsorships, strategic partnerships, referrals and associations all matter.

Final Thoughts

Focusing too much on the dollar value of your brand isn’t something I usually recommend. It’s much more productive to focus instead on building the strongest brand that you can.

Does the idea of bartering conjure up images of a swap meet? Perhaps it brings back memories of grade school lunchtime; wheeling and dealing PBJ’s and oatmeal cookies.

Do you believe that bartering “just doesn’t work”? Are you convinced only wannabe’s, noobs and criminals barter?

Think again!

Barter is a fantastic way to grow your business when cash is tight. It’s time to set the record straight on barter, and how you can use barter to prosper.

Debunking the bad reputation of bartering

Bartering is Different Than Paying Cash

Alternate Title: It’s all in your head!
Why is bartering different than paying cash? This is not a rhetorical question. Why do you believe barter is somehow different than paying cash?

What is money? I know, I know. You want to be a profitable biz owner, not a Buddhist Monk. Hang in there with me!

Perhaps a better question is why do we have money? Because people didn’t want to carry heavy bags of grain around. People also don’t want to be forced to pay 2 live chickens for something only worth 1.5 live chickens because you couldn’t possibly make change.

Money is simply a commonly accepted symbol of value. It represents your hard work, your services, your products. In fact money is nothing more than a go-between. You create a product that you value at $100. I sell a service for $100 so I can buy your product.

How is that any different than if we directly exchanged your product for my services?

It’s not. The only difference between paying with cash and using barter is in your head.

Bartering Doesn’t Require a Contract

Alternate Title: If you have poor business practices you get poor results.
I’ve often heard the complaint that a person didn’t get what they expected in a barter arrangement. Key word there is expected.

When I ask if they any type of written agreement the answer is always no. You can expect a lot of things, that doesn’t mean they will happen. What is important is a clear understanding between the two parties.

“But we talked about it!”

How many times have you “talked” about something with your spouse, friend, or kids and had them forget or have a very different memory of the conversation? I’m not saying it’s deliberate, it is simply human nature. Our memories are imperfect, and that’s assuming you both heard the same thing.

When an agreement is in writing it does two things. First it ensures you are really on the same page (literally!) in regards to all details of the barter deal. Second it creates a clear, permanent record of that agreement. So if a month later there is a dispute you can pull it back out to verify the facts.

It doesn’t need to be a complicated, lengthy document. A single page, or even an email can suffice. Just get it in writing!

Barter Clients aren’t Real Clients

Alternate Title: Client class warfare is a no win battle.
So do you have imaginary clients then? Do you do work for pretend people? I hope not!

This ties in directly with my first point about getting paid by cash versus services. You are performing a service for someone who IS paying you. In my book that makes them a client.

If you can’t treat your barter clients the same as the rest then don’t barter. If your potential barter partner gives any indication of seeing you as less than other clients, don’t barter.

Bartering is Too Complicated

Alternate Title: Because loan applications are soooo easy
This one confuses me the most. Name one way to raise capital for your business that is simple. Even robbing a bank requires a lot of planning if you don’t want to get caught.

In reality bartering is simpler than many forms of funding for your business. The complexity is only slightly more than a standard contract with a client. If you need cash now to grow your business bartering is one of the fastest ways to make it happen.

You may also want to read another post I wrote on all the different forms of barter, and how you can leverage them in your business.

Final Thoughts

Are you convinced that barter might be a solution for you? Have you used barter in the past? What was your experience?
